The annual Met Gala was in full swing at New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art, and this year, fashion’s most anticipated night is all about “Camp: Notes on Style”. It’s about people, things, actions and attitude – a studied triviality encompassing everything from granny specs to pink flamingos making us swoon looking at the red carpet; where else do celebs take such risks after all? Most stars take the dress code very seriously and this year, we expect it to be no different, especially because the theme leaves much room for playful, exaggerated interpretation.
Let’s take a look at the outfits from the night of absolute excess mixed with generous doses of glamour:Lady Gaga
Gaga outdid herself by making a grand entrance in her four outfits’ look, bringing Camp to life in a fuchsia gown by Brandon Maxwell. She used the carpet as an opportunity for performance art, walking with an entourage of five dancers, her personal photographer and her make-up artist.Billy Porter
The man literally gave us a full Cleopatra moment in his bejeweled cat suit with massive wings, a 24 Karat gold headpiece and custom Giuseppe Zanotti shoes; carried by six litter bearers on a black velvet couch.
Deepika Padukone
She looked like a Barbie that hopped straight out of the box. Deepika wore a custom Zac Posen, underwater-inspired gown with glittery sea urchins on it. How cute is that?
Katy Perry
Katy lit up the night in her chandelier outfit – a perfect way to pay homage to Susan Sontag and her 1964 essay, Notes on 'Camp'. She even mentioned that the power source to the chandelier is through “her heart.”
Kendall Jenner and Kylie Jenner
The sisters were spotted twining in showgirl inspired embellished feathered gowns by Versace.
Priyanka Chopra and Nick Jonas
Priyanka looked stunning in a Dior Haute Couture silver gown with colorful feathered ruffles and a matching cape. Nick was equally mesmerizing in a Dior Men white tux, Chopard jewels and matching Christian Louboutin shoes.
Jennifer Lopez
J-Lo is no novice when it comes to making a statement on the red carpet and she confirmed it to the ‘nth’ degree with her sparkly Versace dress and pin-thin iridescent heels.
Serena Williams
She proved that she’s a champ both on and off the tennis court by rocking a dramatic canary yellow Versace gown with off-white kicks by designer Virgil Abloh.
Sophie Turner and Joe Jonas
The newly dubbed Mr & Mrs Jonas took the theme very seriously and were spotted coordinating in Louis Vuitton by Nicolas Ghesquière
Cardi B
When Camp got mixed with feminism, it resulted in the largest, reddest and possibly the heaviest gown (designed by Thom Browne) that the rapper wore for the gala night.
Kim Kardashian
Kim’s ocean soaked Met Gala look gave an illusion of a dripping wet appearance with its beads and sequins detailing. The skin fitted dress by Thierry Mugler looked mesmerizing as it seemingly defied the laws of physics.
